The City of Gems
Sabaragamuwa Province · 100 km from Colombo · ~2.5 hours from Colombo
Nestled deep in Sri Lanka's Sabaragamuwa highlands, Ratnapura has been the epicenter of the global sapphire trade for over 2,000 years. The city sits above a vast layer of illam — a rich gravel sediment packed with gems deposited by ancient rivers. Licensed miners work shallow pits using traditional scoops and hand-sluice methods almost unchanged since the time of Marco Polo. Our expert-led tours grant access to active mine sites, the National Gem and Jewellery Authority licensed dealer district, and a private lapidary studio operated by master craftsmen — an experience unavailable to general tourists.
Actual stones depend on seasonal field activity and current site conditions.
